Our new way to search for purposeful work

Dear Escapees,

Britain has entered the time of year when someone looks out of the window at 4.15pm and says, “God, it’s dark”, as though November has personally taken them by surprise.

The clocks went back last weekend and we got one extra hour in bed in exchange for the strange experience of finishing work and feeling like it should already be 9.30pm. In summer you can shut the laptop at six and still have a whole other bit of day waiting for you. In November, six o’clock is black windows, tea, and wondering whether 8pm is too early to get into bed.

It does make work feel a bit greedier somehow. A long commute feels longer. A draining day follows you home more obviously. If you’re already spending most of the week giving a job your best hours, the darker months are very good at making you notice what, exactly, is left afterwards.

Maybe that’s why this time of year can make a perfectly tolerable job start to feel slightly less tolerable.
